SeaHorse POLAN webserver deployed.

For anyone who cares to know, this web server is actually one of a number of "virtual hosts" running on a single "consolidation server" that TDC acquired in Mid-Aug/06. The hardware platform is:

  • Athlon64/X2 (2000mhz dual core) CPU
  • 2 gigs ram
  • 1u rackmount case
  • 2 x 320gig (mirrored) SATA HDDs
  • Multiple network interfaces (2x GigEther, 1 x 100mbit)

This physical server will also be hosting (in the near future) POLAN Public web and mail server functions as well.

The Seahorse VirtualServer is providing web content via "PMWiki" wiki software, an easy-to-use / easy-to-manage wiki solution which TDC is quite partial towards. It is, of course, running using the ApacheHTTPDaemon.

The server operating system used for this environment is CentOS, an open-source free linux distro with no license / maintence fees associated, but which provides regular updates from "enterprise class" linux distro code base. "the best of both worlds" IMHO.

Anyone who might wish to make suggestions or recommendations for content / layout /etc. on this website, should please send an email to tim.chipman@phys.ocean.dal.ca

(Footnote: For those of you who want to know where the graphic of "seahorse" came from - take a look at this article from Wikipedia )
