Windows PC Workstations clearly need to have some kind of anti-virus software installed as a basic preventative measure. Although Dal has a site-license on McAfee AV Software, I strongly encourage the use of another product, which happens to be free for personal use.

AVG AntiVirus is available for download from the URL:

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5#avg-anti-virus-free

I would recommend this software to anyone who is running a windows computer.

As of Nov-2006, the current version of AVG is version 7.5 . If you are currently using an older version of AVG (7.1 or earlier for example) you will probably have been getting warning notice reminders that your current version will be discontinued for support (Virus Updates) in Jan/07. As a consequence, I would encourage you to update to the latest and greatest version - simply download the installer for the new version and allow it to install ; it will automatically uninstall the old version and configure the new version appropriately.

Added Mar-2007: For people who cannot run AVG Antivirus, for whatever reason (*) I can also recommend another free antivirus, "AVIRA AntiVir" anti-virus software. It appears to be light and non-invasive on the host system and functions smoothly. It is available for download from the URL, http://www.free-av.com/

(*) One known case where AVG failed to install was on a specific WinXP Pro "corporate" licensed machine. Since AVG-Free is officially only for use on Home/Personal systems, this makes some kind of sense, even if it doesn't always complain..
